Dear Supporters,

In 2018, our journey began with Dr. Terry Heiman-Patterson and her exceptional team, capturing their groundbreaking work on film. Despite our momentum, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic forced us to pause our filming efforts. The production team compiled a short film using the available footage until the opportune moment arose to resume filming.

Now, we're thrilled to announce the launch of our crowdfunding campaign aimed at reigniting production for "Now is the Time," a compelling documentary spotlighting the remarkable endeavors of the MDA/ALS Hope Foundation at Temple University in Philadelphia. Spearheaded by the esteemed Dr. Terry Heiman-Patterson and her devoted team, this film offers a poignant and exclusive window into the fight against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and the dedicated individuals combating it every day.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:

Dr. Heiman-Patterson and her team operate a multi-disciplinary clinic designed to streamline the care process for individuals grappling with ALS. This setup ensures that patients receive comprehensive support and necessary services without enduring the strain of multiple appointments and extensive travel. By offering specialist consultations and testing all in a single day, their goal is to alleviate the physical and mental burden on patients and their families.

Despite the clinic's invaluable services, it lacks full insurance coverage. Dr. Heiman-Patterson actively fundraises to cover treatment costs and provide necessary resources for patients, eliminating any out-of-pocket expenses and ensuring financial barriers do not hinder access to care. Daily, she and her team navigate the complexities of the US healthcare system, securing essential services and support for their patients. When the system falls short, they step in to bridge the gap through fundraising efforts.

This documentary provides an in-depth exploration of the profound impact ALS has on both patients and the healthcare team, offering unparalleled access to the inner workings of the ALS clinic.

STYLE & APPROACH :

The documentary "Now is the Time" will be captured predominantly in a cinema verite-style, emphasizing authenticity and immediacy. The approach will utilize one to two cameras, prioritizing natural lighting and sound to create an intimate and unfiltered depiction of daily life at the MDA/ALS Hope Foundation clinic.

Visual Aesthetic:

Cinema Verite: The visuals will embrace the raw and unscripted nature of cinema verite, capturing genuine moments as they unfold.

Natural Lighting: Utilization of available natural light will enhance the realism of the scenes, emphasizing the authenticity of the clinic environment.

Handheld Camera: The use of handheld cameras will facilitate a fluid and immersive viewing experience, allowing the audience to feel present in the moment.

Intimate Framing: Close-up shots will convey emotional depth and connection with the subjects, fostering empathy and understanding.

NARRATIVE STRUCTURE:

Establishing Location: The documentary will begin by establishing the setting of the MDA/ALS Hope Foundation clinic in Philadelphia, immersing viewers into the daily operations.

Rounds with Dr. Heiman-Patterson: Dr. Heiman-Patterson's rounds will serve as a central through-line, guiding the narrative as viewers meet three patients and their families.

Brief Statements: The film will incorporate concise statements from Dr. Heiman-Patterson, clinic staff, patients, and family members, providing insights and reflections on ALS and the clinic's work.

No Formal Interviews: The absence of formal sit-down interviews will maintain the spontaneity and authenticity of interactions, keeping the audience engaged in the unfolding events.

LOCATIONS:

The documentary will feature three primary locations within the clinic, each contributing a distinct tone:

The Clinic: The clinic "floor" and "war room" embody organized chaos, serving as the hub for pre-appointment meetings and vital discussions. The shooting style in these areas will be handheld, employing a dynamic "run and gun" approach with a quick pace to capture the bustling energy of the clinic environment. Transitioning into the exam room, the pacing will shift to a slower, more deliberate rhythm, allowing the filmmaker to deeply explore the patient's story. The focus will center on the interactions between the doctor, patient, and family members, covering all elements of the examination process with sensitivity and attention to detail.

At Home:The filmmaker will visit the patient's home to capture their personal story and observe how the clinic's treatments are integrated into their daily life. Additionally, the filmmaker will spend time with Dr. Heiman-Patterson and selected members of her team at their homes, providing insights into their personal lives and perspectives outside of the clinic setting.

Fundraising: The filmmaker will document Dr. Heiman-Patterson and her team as they organize and participate in fundraising events to support the ongoing operations of the clinic. This behind-the-scenes footage will showcase their efforts to secure funding and resources essential for sustaining the clinic's services and initiatives.

DISTRIBUTION:

"Now is the Time" will employ a comprehensive distribution strategy utilizing a blend of traditional and innovative methods to maximize audience reach.

Streaming Services: Our primary goal is to secure placement on a major streaming platform. Director Tom Caamańo, known for pitching and directing series for networks and streaming services, will leverage his industry relationships to pitch the documentary to platforms such as Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, HBO, APT, and others.

Community Screenings: The film will host community screenings at hospitals and ALS Galas, including events at The ALS Hope Foundation Gala, Temple Hospital, Hershey Medical Center, and beyond. These screenings will target the medical community, featuring post-screening discussions with a panel of doctors and the filmmaker.

Film Festivals: "Now is the Time" will be submitted to prestigious film festivals including Sundance, Tribeca, Global Health Film Festival, Berlin International Film Festival, Toronto International Film Festival, Venice Film Festival, and more. Participation in these festivals will elevate the documentary's visibility and credibility within the film industry.

Hospital Film Tour: Following completion, a multi-city hospital film tour will be launched across the United States. This tour aims to showcase the film to diverse audiences and facilitate panel discussions with ALS experts and community members. The tour will serve as an educational and interactive platform to raise awareness and foster dialogue around ALS.

Through this multi-faceted approach, "Now is the Time" will engage audiences on streaming platforms, within healthcare communities, at prestigious festivals, and through interactive nationwide screenings, ensuring widespread exposure and impact for the documentary
